Cytogenetics of three breeds of river buffalo (Bubalus bubalis L.), with evidence of a fragile site on the X chromosome.

The karyotype of 182 Murrah, Mediterranean and Jaffarabadi buffaloes was studied by Giemsa staining, and R and C banding. The 3 breeds had a similar karyotype. 44% of animals had a fragile site on the X-chromosome. The incidence of metaphases expressing the fragile site varied from 2.86 to 41.03%. In general, only one of the X-chromosomes in females showed the fragile site; this chromosome was shown to correspond to the late replicating X-chromosome by R banding. The presence of the fragile site had no effect on phenotype.
