Evergreen Issued Renewal Permit of Discharged Wastewater

Evergreen Packaging Group was issued a permit renewal May 26 from the North Carolina Division of Water Quality for the discharge of treated wastewater from its Canton boxboard mill in Canton, N.C., The Citizen-Times reports. The mill had operated on permit extensions since 2006; the new permit will not come up for renewal until 2015. The permit was issued after years of debate over its terms among environmental groups, mill and area officials, and the state and federal governments. One of the biggest concerns has been the color of the wastewater discharged into the Pigeon River.
