Storat Analyzes Containarboard Market

On Sept. 30, Dick Storat, publisher of the monthly "Scoring Boxes," reviewed supply and demand drivers in the con-tainerboard market through a conference call sponsored by Deutsche Bank. Some key points in his presentation included: 1. Containerboard production is shrinking. In 2000, U.S. board mills produced 37.3 million short tons; today the remaining mills make 36.5 million tons for a net reduction of 4.5 percent. The top three producers now compose 70 percent of the total industry, thanks to the pending International Paper/Temple-Inland deal.
