OCC Prices Take a Breather

OCC-consuming board mills throughout the country came out of the Thanksgiving holiday with inventories in excellent shape, leading to prices leveling offfor the first time since August. Yes, the Buffalo OCC price rose substantially (and New England and New York were tweaked up $ 5 per ton to level the playing field) but this only accurately represents what occurred in the market over the past four weeks. In early November, board mills in Buffalo didn't have to pay the strong OCC prices that their counterparts in New England and New York had to pay because the latter two regions were competing with strong export demand. Since that time, Buffalo was invaded by mills looking to buy bargain-priced OCC. Appropriate adjustments have been made to reflect this development.
