Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. (SSCC), Chicago, reports a second quarter loss of $31 million compared to a profit of $15 million during the same time last year. The company attributes the results to higher energy, freight and chemical costs. Sales of $1.8 billion for the second quarter 2008 were comparable to both the prior year quarter and first quarter 2008.
