China has surpassed the U.S. in paper and paperboard production for the first time, out producing the U.S. by about 900,000 metric tons. In first-half 2008, China produced 41.7 million metric tons of paper and paperboard, an increase of 14.5 percent from the same period last year. In the U.S., paper and paperboard output in the first half of this year was 40.8 million metric tons, a decrease of 0.5 percent.
