In the end it wasn't SARS. And it wasn't bird flu either. It wasn't even swine flu. It was, of course, volcanic ash from Iceland that caused the first lengthy closure of any of the world's airspace. The chaos that resulted from flights neither leaving nor entering Europe's airports for the best part of a week forced many businesses and organisations to employ their crisis management programmes in a way very few of them had thought they would ever need to do. One of the results was that many international conferences had to be postponed.
