Breakthroughs and setbacks in the development of gene and cell therapy attract considerable attention and may give the impression that this new field sits astride a giant scientific roller coaster. In fact, these widely publicised events represent only one small aspect of a field which is more akin to a massive iceberg underpinned by an unseen, solid and growing mass of scientific understanding, proceeding slowly and inexorably forward towards significant clinical utility.
