The Egyptian Ministry of Health (MoH) is concerned about the continuing and increasing risk to public health posed by counterfeit medicines and is putting increased effort into implementing the country's counterfeiting laws. The market for pharmaceuticals is flourishing in Egypt and the circulation of poor quality, harmful and counterfeit active ingredients and finished products is seen as seriously reducing the quality of patient healthcare, and possibly life-threatening. There are several reasons why the counterfeit market is healthy. Counterfeiting is a lucrative business, counterfeiters take advantage of poor, uneducated patients who cannot afford the costs of registered medicines and those concerned are usually reluctant to report, to avoid involvement in lengthy investigations.
