Endovascular Devices: The ZOLL Thermogard XP~R Temperature Management System

The ZOLL Thermogard XP~R Temperature Management System is the new version of the Alsius CoolGard 3000~R system and the Thermogard~(TM). ZOLL purchased the Alsius temperature management line several years ago. The ZOLL thermal regulation line contains four intravascular cooling catheter options to connect to the Thermogard or CoolGard systems: the Alsius Icy, Quattro, Solex, and the Cool Line catheters.The Alsius CoolGard 3000, Thermogard, or Thermogard XP using the Icu, Solex, or Quattro catheter is FDA approved for use in cardiac surgery patients to achieve and/or maintain normothermia during surgery and recovery/intensive care and to induce, maintain, and reverse mild hypothermia in neurosurgery patients in surgery and recovery/intensive care (www.alsius.com/products/ifu.htrnl). The Alsius CoolGard 3000, Thermogard, or Thermogard XP using the Cool Line Catheter is indicated for use in fever reduction as an adjunct to other antipyretic therapy in patients with cerebral infarction and intracerebral hemorrhage who require access to the central venous circulation and who are intubated and sedated. As with other temperature management systems, the device does not hold an FDA indication to induce, maintain, or reverse mild hypothermia for comatose survivors of cardiac arrest.
