Aerobic Bacteria Associated with Spoilage of Hides and Skins

The present work was carried out to isolate and identify aerobic bacteria associated with putrifaction of cattle hides and sheep skins. The samples were taken at Omdurman Slaughterhouse, Hides and Skins Warehouses in Omdurman, El Nasr Tannery and Leather Technology Centre in Khartoum. Signs of putrifaction were clear in samples takens after 24 hours of slaughtering. Offensive odour and hair slipping were principal signs. A total of 545 isolates consisting of 79.17% Gram-positive and 20.8.3 % Gram negative organisms were isolated. The Gram-positive organisms isolated included the genera, Staphylococcus, Micrococcus,Enterococcus, Stomatococcus, Aerococcus, Streptococcus, Gemella, Bacillus. Corynebacterium, Listeria, Brochothrix, Gardnerella and Lactobacillus. The Gram-negative organisms included the genera Escherichia, Providencia, Moraxella, Yersinia, Proteus, Enterobacter, Kluyvera, Hqfhia, Citrobacter, Morgan ella, Pseudomonas and Erwinia. The criteria used for identification of the isolates were, reaction to Gram's stain, morphological appearance, culture properties and biochemical tests.
