Recent Advances in the Surgery and Adjuvant Treatment of Lung Cancer: Tribute to Robert J. Ginsberg

On March 1, 2003, the Thoracic Surgical Community lost a valued member when Dr Robert Jason Ginsberg died of the very disease that he spent a lifetime studying. He was a leader in the field of Thoracic Surgical Oncology and had a profound impact on the career and life of many of the authors of this issue of Thoracic Surgery Clinics on surgery for lung cancer. Indeed, mos.t articles presented in this issue have been written by thoracic surgeons and medical oncologists who were friends or trainees of Dr Ginsberg.From our perspective as thoracic surgeons, we have elected to discuss in this issue those aspects of lung cancer surgery that are still intriguing and challenging to us. In 1982, one of us (F. Griffith Pearson) reported a series of 141 consecutive N2 patients who had had cervical mediastinoscopy and subsequently had undergone surgical resection.
