Shedding Light on Darkness

The interior of the Sun produces a continuous spectrum. When we look at the Sun's spectrum, however, we see dark lines that are known as Fraunhofer Dark Lines. Contained within the Sun's continuous spectrum are wavelengths that correspond to transitions between energy levels in the various elements that exist in the Sun. These wavelengths radiate from the Sun's interior and are then partially absorbed by the corresponding elements in the Sun's cooler outer atmosphere.
