Yield Characteristics of Sweet Corn Under Deficit Irrigation in Southeastern Turkey

The influence of deficit drip irrigation on yield characteristics of sweet corn was determined inSanliurfa, Turkey during the 1998 and 1999 cropping seasons. Water was applied to sweet cornas 100%, 90%, 80% and 70% of evaporation from a Class A Pan (E_(pan)). Plant height, ear length,number of kernels per ear and weight of single fresh ear were highest at 100% E_(pan) whereas thelowest values were observed at 70% E_(pan) in both years. Water savings varied between 10.91%and 31.15% depending on water deficiency treatments. The highest fresh ear yields (12.76 and12.44 t ha-1) were obtained at 100% E_(pan) and the minimum fresh ear yields (7.90 and 7.31 t ha-1)at 70% E_(pan) in both years. Fresh ear yields at 100% and 90% E_(pan) were not significantly different.Despite reduction in fresh ear yield because of deficit irrigation, 80% E_(pan) had no negative effecton the number of marketable ears. In conclusion, deficit drip irrigation up to 20% (80% E_(pan)) canbe acceptable for sweet corn (cv. Jubilee) production in the southeastern region of Turkey.
