Equine respiratory disease: A causal role for Streptococcus zooepidemicus

Respiratory disease affects a large proportion of young horses around the world, with an incidence of approximately five cases per 100 horses per month (Burrell et al, 1996 and Wood et al, 2005a). The mean duration of clinical signs for each episode is around 8 weeks and the disease often reoccurs in individual animals, causing considerable disruption to the equine industry.
