The interpretation of thromboelastography tracings: Many (more) rivers to cross

Thromboembolic disorders in companion animals can have inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic and metabolic etiologies, and the outcome can range from subclinical disease to rapid mortality. Moreover, the diagnosis of hypercoagulability and thrombosis are highly challenging given the lack of a diagnostic ‘gold standard’ in terms of laboratory assays or imaging modalities. One of the most notorious predisposing causes of thromboembolism in dogs is immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). The early diagnosis of hypercoagulability could facilitate aggressive medical intervention that may decrease morbidity and mortality in at-risk patients.
