Principles of mechanical ventilation

Mechanical ventilation can be a life-saving and rewarding therapy for critically ill patients and their owners. It requires demanding preparation from the veterinary hospital and commitment from the owner. This article reviews the indications and requirements for initiating positive-pressure ventilation therapy, including hospital preparedness, choices of ventilators, monitoring requirements, basic therapeutic plans, complications, and weaning.
