Recent advances in molecular genetics provide the groundwork for the development of genetic tests for the diagnosis and prevention of inherited diseases. The basis for the testing and the types of tests offered are explained in this article. Veterinarians should be prepared to understand genetic testing and counseling because they are becoming important to the practice of veterinary medicine.
