摘要

Evidence seems to be accumulating regarding the occur rence of small pots interred with human burials along the Riet River and in the area of its confluence with the Vaal River near Douglasinlli the Northerm Cape (Fig.1). Humphreys(1970) high lighted two virtually complete pots and som ffragments of a larger pot from the 'Fowler Collection' troni along the Riet.Subsequently Brink et al. (1992) reported a small pot from a rescue excavation at Pramberg, also on the Riet River, A further rescue from along the Riet was undertaken at Poortjie by Ouzman and this _ytdu." irtunlly identical" pot to that recovered by Brink et, al, (Ouzman 2001: 8). Humphreys (1982) described the cultural material from a series of burials from thefarm St Clair in the Douglas area on the basis of which, although it did not include pottery, it was suggested "...it is clear that the burials are related to those occurring along the Riet River" (Humphreys 1982: 70). This statement was madebecause of strong parallels among the other grave goods. There are, however, four pots from the Douglas area which wererecovered from burials but which have not yet been recorded in the literature. The reason for this is that one burial was not, so ldr as is known, specifically from St Clair, hence its omission from iJiu ilurnphivv, yllJ62) discussion, while the other three cannot be li nked to any particular skeletal remains preserved in I'II' McGregor Museum, Kimberley, though they are known to have been recovered from burials in the Douglas area. It seems important to add these pots to the published data base for these 'miniature pottery burials' as a distinct pattern appears to be emerging.
