A HISTORY OF REMOVING ROCK ART IN SOUTH AFRICA

Many Soutli African museums and institutions house removed rock art panels, but little has been written about the historical context of these removals. This paper investigate the long history of rock art removals in South Africa, An analysis of this history reveals the changing motives for removing rock art over the last century. I divide the history of rack art tvmoi'uls in south Africa into three chronological periods, each typified byn principal motive far removal. An example of a rock art panel removed from a site in the Eastern Cape Province by a prominent Soutli African artist during the 1940s demonstrates the complexity of motives for removing rock art.
