Bovine TB: controls on cattle to be strengthened in England

This study was conducted to determine the role of mules as possible silent shedders during an outbreak of Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) myeloencephalopathy in California, USA. A total of 82 horses and 59 mules were analysed using PCR and serology. Results revealed that the vital loads were lowest in asymptomatic horses and highest in horses with neurological cases, while significantly higher in the nasal secretions of asymptomatic mules. It is suggested that mules are protected from the development of neurological signs, but indicate their role as silent shedders of EHV-1.Digital Object Identifier http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/vr.100598
