Severe alopecia areata and onychodystrophy on all four feet of a French trotter mare.

A 22-year-old French trotter mare in France [date not given] was presented with a 9-month history of extensive, non-inflammatory, non-pruritic alopecia that had started from the head and gradually progressed to the whole body. Marked dystrophy of all for hooves was also observed, characterized by onychogryphosis, onychoschisis and onychorrhexis. No other abnormalities were observed. Skin biopsies, histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of alopecia areata. The progression of the disease was observed for 9 months, which showed no hair regrowth and the hooves needed constant care.
