Abortion in sows associated with carbon monoxide intoxication.

This short communication describes a large-scale abortion incident affecting pregnant sows in Poland, due to carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of malfunctioning gas-fired heaters. In January 2006, a total of 79 sows aborted in three episodes after introduction to farrowing houses with gas-fired heaters. Based on the interview with the farm owner, clinical observations, gross and histopathological changes and the negative results of laboratory tests for viral and bacterial infections, it was concluded that the abortions were due to carbon monoxide intoxication.
