Isolation and identification of Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides SC strains in sheep and goats

MYCOPLASMA mycoides subspecies mycoides is the aetiological agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP). This organism has also been isolated from goats (Cottew and Yeats 1978). In this laboratory's study of mycoplasmal mastitis five M mycoidessubspecies mycoides belonging to the small colony (sc) type have been isolated. Three strains were isolated from the milk of sheep with symptoms of mastitis; the other two strains were from goats with pneumonia. Post mortem examinations revealed that the animals with symptoms of pneumonia showed interstitial pneumonia lesions with the pneumonic focus at the apical, cardiac and diaphramatic lobes, and mesenteric lymph node hypertrophy.
