GASTRIC polyps are uncommon in dogs, but are occasionally seen during endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract (Simpson 2005). They are usually considered to be benign and are rarely associated with clinical signs, although they can lead to vomiting if the pyloric outflow tract is obstructed (Guilford and Strombeck 1996). Gastric polyps are relatively common in human beings, and are seen in between 0-6 per cent and 3 per cent of all upper gastrointestinal endoscopies (Silverstein and Tytgat 1997, Morais and others 2007); they can be associated with clinical signs such as anaemia (Vittal 1975), vomiting and, infrequently, gastric outflow tract obstruction (Gencosmanoglu and others 2003, Freeman 2005). Endoscopic polypectomy is the treatment of choice for benign gastric polyps in human beings (Ghazi and others 1984, Muehldorfer and others 2002); this technique has not been described in dogs. This short communication describes a benign gastric polyp causing pyloric outflow tract obstruction in adog, and its subsequent endoscopic excision.
