Clinical survey on the prevalence and types of cheek teeth disorders present in 400 Zamorano-Leones and 400 Mirandes donkeys (Equus asinus)

The prevalence, aetiology and pathogenesis of equid dental disorders have mainly been investigated in horses, but recent clinical and postmortem studies in the UK and Mexico have documented a very high prevalence of similar dental disorders in donkeys, emphasising the frequent absence of routine dental care in this species. The aim of this survey was to clinically investigate the prevalence and type of cheek teeth (CT) disorders present in two endangered breeds of donkeys: the Mirandes and the Zamorano-Leones donkeys in Portugal and Spain. In addition to hopefully providing new information on the prevalence and type of dental disorders in these two endangered breeds, these data on 800 donkeys using contemporaneous disease definitions and examinationtechniques should also provide significant information for the general, equid population.
