Industry Faces Measurement Challenges Under EC Nanomaterial Regs

Companies subject to nanotechnology requirements under European cosmetics law face the challenge of measuring materials against the European Commission's recommended definition, which isn't as simple as it may seem on the surface, a September report from the EC's Joint Research Centre suggests. Roughly one year ago, the EC adopted a definition for what constitutes a "nanomaterial" from a regulatory standpoint. Currently released as a recommendation that does not necessitate immediate practical implementation, the definition eventually could be wrapped into legislation, including Europe's recast Cosmetics Directive.
