Merck Settles Class Suit Targeting Coppertone Claims, Denies Wrongdoing

Merck and Co. puts to rest nearly a decade of class-action litigation targeting alleged misrepresentations in Coppertone sunscreen claims and marketing, agreeing to compensate consumers and to comply with pending labeling and claims standards. Under the terms of the settlement filed Sept. 21 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Merck has agreed to comply with labeling and claims standards that will become law in December for most firms under FDA's final rule for sunscreen labeling and effectiveness testing, released in June 2011.
