The Professional Keratin Smoothing Council will present data at the next Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel meeting to support its position that methylene glycol can be safely used in hair-smoothing product formulations, in a bid to have the panel's previous "unsafe" assessment overturned. PKSC maintains that many salons use the smoothing products on consumers to no ill effects, employing proper air ventilation systems that keep recorded formaldehyde levels "well below" permissible exposure limits set by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
