CIR Expert Panel Set To Make Final Formaldehyde Recommendations Sept. 27

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel could issue a final safety assessment for formaldehyde and methylene glycol at its Sept. 27 meeting. If the panel affirms its June revised tentative amended report - concluding the ingredients are "unsafe" in hair-smoothing products intended to be heated - it would validate concerns from consumer watchdog groups, FDA and many personal-care industry members. The expert panel reached its earlier conclusion after heated debate and a tie-breaking vote cast by dermatologist and Panel Chair Dr. Wilma F.
