It was quite by chance that 68 years ago I found myself taking steps towards becoming a member of the Pharmaceutical Society.On leaving school I had intended to join the whisky industry.Members of my family had worked in the industry and,in fact,tentative arrangements to this end had been made.In the late 1930s,however,war clouds were beginning to appear on the horizon.This did not augur well for distillers because barley supplies were likely to be restricted - the grain would be needed to feed both humans and animals.So my plan was thwarted.
