GBR: An Increasing Problem

Cylindrodadium Black Rot (CBR) continues to make its mark on fields across the Southeast. Growers should take every precaution to ensure they do not spread the disease to unaffected fields. The why is simple. Once your field is infected with CBR, unless you can plant another crop for the next eight to 10 years, it will be there forever. Tom Kucharek, University of Florida plant pathologist says that CBR has moved into new fields in his state, and remains intense in areas where it has been for some time. "As equipment is moved, the soil clinging to tires and implements will move the inoculum from one field to the next," he says. "A good dust storm will also move it around."
