How deep is too deep when it comes to incorporating herbicides? "It is dependent on each herbicide and their degree of volatility," says John Everest, Extension weed scientist with Auburn University. "If herbicides are incorporated too deep, there isa dilution effect. There won't be the degree of weed control we'd like." It is important for growers to read the labels to find the correct depth at which the herbicides should be incorporated, Everest says. "The two most commonly used preplant incorporated herbicides in peanuts are Sonalan and Prowl/Pendimax," says Eric Prostko, Extension weed specialist at the University of Georgia. "If you look at the label of both of these products, it is recommended that they be incorporated into the top two inches of the final seedbed." Why is two inches so important? "Most weeds germinate and emerge from this depth," Prostko says.
