First record of Tonatia brasiliense (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) in Oaxaca, Mexico

During a survey of small mammals in Laadu, at 10.6 km NW Los Reyes Yagalaxi, Oaxaca, Mexico (17 deg 37 min 30 sec N, 96 deg 15 min 55 sec W, elevation 360 m), near the Soyolapan River, we caught one pygmy round-eared bat, Tonatia brasiliense, (field number 456 of MB-S). The pregnant female was caught in a mist net placed at ground level, in lowland evergreen tropical rainforest on 26 March 1998. Other species collected at the locality were Platyrrhinus helleri, Sturnira ludovici, and Artibeus intermedius. This specimen represents the first record of T. brasiliense in Oaxaca (Hall, 1981; Koopman, 1993), and is 220 km northwest of the nearest previously known locality at Tenochtitlan, Veracruz, Mexico (17 deg 45 min N sec, 94 deg 45 min W), where Lackey (1970) obtained 3 males.
