Aquifer biofilm-forming isolates from the Edwards Aquifer, Texas, were characterized biochemically and by phylogenetic analyses based on partial 500 bp 16S rRNA sequencing. Five of the 8 strains evaluated were gram-negative and the other 3 were gram-positive. Phylogenetic analyses suggested novelty of 3 isolates, and biochemical analysis showed a range of carbon-source use patterns among the isolates. Such baseline information will be useful for investigating biofilm population interactions, as wellas understanding the microbial ecology of unpolluted karst aquifers.
