New SSI plant will help safeguard 1,800 Teesside jobs

Steelmaker SSI is about to press the green button on an investment which it hopes will transform its business. The Thai company is just days away from bringing the ?37m Redcar Pulverised Coal Injection facility - the world's biggest of its kind -online, in a move that will safeguard 1,800 jobs and thousands more across Teesside's supply chain. Finely powdered coal will be blown into the bLast furnace, speeding up the steelmaking process - and help SSI remove the "lead weights tied to its feet" according to bosses. And it will pull the company out of the "hole associated with supplier arrears" that was dug last year, due to a tough global steel market and start-up delays.
