Spirit and Enthusiasm of the Global Refractories Community

A noteworthy memory was created at the banquet (November 2, 2011) of UNITECR'll in Kyoto, Japan (see Figure 1), which deserves to be highlighted and preserved for the global refractories community, especially for the people starting their career in refractories, and for those considering a career in refractories. Dr. Kiyoshi Sugita (Nippon Steel Corp. -Retired), and one of the key contributors to the founding of UNITECR) presented a moving, memorable narrative and toast at the banquet, which is summarized below: "About 50 years ago I made my first trip to Europe and the USA, when I was 30 years old, and in the early years of my career in refractories. That trip included profound culture shock and was one of the most memorable events of my life. Many of my experiences on that trip, and the people that I met, are still vivid memories for me".
