MONITORING RANGELANDS: A MORE INTEGRATED APPROACH USING BIOPHYSICAL AND SOCIOECONOMIC INDICATORS

Effectively managing for the sustainable use of rangelands while maintaining their biodiversity, social and cultural values depends on monitoring - measuring status and change in rangeland attributes, or their indicators, over time. Monitoring is becoming increasingly important globally as more and more people need a place to live that also provides basic products and services such as food, fibre and clean water. These people are also facing climate variability and climate change, and monitoring is needed to separate human-induced changes in rangelands from natural variability. Thus, it is critical to measure a range of attributes or indicators, from biophysical to socioeconomic, that usefully detect changes. Are there new developments?
