India's higher spending on R&D,at 45% CAGR,reflects its enhanced status in the global knowledge economy,no doubt.An equally bright picture emerges from the trend in incoming MNC R&D activities.Yet,place it in perspective:Unesco's database (2004) on R&D intensity in purchasing power parity terms reveals that even as late as 2000,against a world average of 1.9% and developing countries' average of 0.9%,India's gross expenditure on R&D was only 0.7% of its GDP.
