Those of us who are interested in old microscope slides have in recent years been able to access an increasing range of information about makers of these slides and the minutiae of their lives. The availability on the Internet of censuses and word recognition programs has made research possible with the minimum of effort. In most cases the details of the genealogy and lives of slide makers add very little to our understanding of their preparations. There are exceptions to this such as the Toppings and Fred Enock. The latter's personality, dedication and single-minded perfectionism help us understand the quality and specialisation of his life's work.
