The letter to the editor and our papers that it critiques are concerned with the relative roles of peripheral and central influences on exercise performance (Amann et al. 2006a, 2007). Our published papers have already dealt with almost all of the criticisms listed in this very long letter and we will not repeat these. Rather, our response will (a) briefly clarify our findings and opinions as to how we see this complex problem; (b) address selected comments from the letter; and (c) emphasize what is needed for the further understanding of the problem
