Should blind internal jugular venous catheterization be avoided in a patient with ipsilateral permanent pacemaker implant?

Transvenous approach is the most common method for permanent pacemaker implantation. Venous thrombosis and stenosis at the implantation site are the most common complications with the incidence up to one third of the patients [1-3]. Many a time an urgent central venous cannulation is required in the emergency department and intensive care unit wherein site selection requires due consideration of the possibility of venous thrombosis and stenosis secondary to permanent pacemaker. We report a case of failed right internal jugular venous catheterization in a patient having permanent pacemaker through ipsilateral subclavian vein (SCV).
