Meals ready to be eaten are used by diffuse array of organizations and people, ranging from the military to hikers. These "meals ready to eaf' consist of processed or freeze-dried food coupled with a food-heating device (FHD) consisting of a flat-grayish powder of a magnesium-iron alloy and silica packaged in a porous nonwoven plastic pouch. When a person adds water to the alloy, hyper-corrosion occurs, generating heat for the food, which is placed nearby. We describe a case of ingestion of the spent powder from the FHD, resulting in minor toxicity.
