THE MARKET FOR paraxylene remains challenging for producers, especially ones based on North America. On a global basis, demand continues to grow rapidly, but producers in Asia have brought on massive amounts of capacity during the past four years, and the slowdown of the US economy, coupled with the retreat of the North American textile and apparel industries in the face of low-cost competition from Asia, has strained sales and margins for the paraxylene industry.
