The results of an expert meeting, organized by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the USA in association with various American obesity and diabetes associations, on the clinical value of waist circumference measurements, are presented. Four questions were answered by the consensus panel, viz. the techniques and anatomic relations of waist circumference measurements; the biological mechanisms responsible for the association between waist circumference and metabolic and cardiovascular risk; the power of waist circumference in predicting adverse cardiometabolic outcomes, including its relative power when compared with BMI; and the importance of waist circumference measurement in clinical practice..
