For >2 decades, the field of percutaneous coronary revascu-larization has been rapidly evolving. This is especially true as it relates to coronary stenting and, specifically, to the use of drag-eluting stents (DES). The introduction of antiproliferative therapies was seen initially as among the great watersheds in cardiac and vascular medicine. Since US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of this technology, rapidly increasing use of DES has resulted in a greater understanding of the underlying science. Few medical devices have undergone such rigorous testing, and the considerable volume of safety and efficacy data that has been amassed has rarely been seen before in modern medicine.
