Domestic Demand for North American soda ash was was flat to stable during 2001, but the market tightened in the fourth quarter. New entrant American Soda LLP's less-tan-expected production output caused spot shortages as soda ash exports increased. This followed the mothballing of roughly 15 to 17 percent of nameplate capacity earlier in the year that helped create better supply and demand balance.
