Toward prevention or cure for recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a rare debilitating disease caused by infection with types 6 and 11 of the human papilloma virus (HPV). Although the prevalence of RRP is generally believed to be 1 to 4 per 100,000 in many western countries, no estimated prevalence of RRP has previously been reported for the United Kingdom (UK). The purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence and economic burden of RRP in the UK and to explore immunologic factors that could potentially advance the search for prevention or cure of this disease.
