Maximising your yields

The key to a successful organic system is ensuring soil health by rotating crops, protecting your soil structure and adding loads of organic matter. However, once you have your basic rotation established, you'll find that there are several 'extras' that will further increase your production. The first is successional sowing. This technique is common for salad crops that are in the ground for a short time, and is also useful for crops such as beans, peas, carrots, and fennel. Each of these can be sownover a long period, so rather than planting in one go, you raise new seedlings over a period of time to space out harvest time. Take the technique one step further and you can fit in one crop before or after another in the same plot. For example, startFrench beans in pots in July and plant them immediately after an early potato crop in August rather than leaving the plot fallow.
