Focal stroke is a disabling disease with lifelong sensory, motorand cognitive impairments. Given the paucity of effectiveclinical treatments, basic scientists are developing noveloptions for protection of the affected brain and regenerationof lost tissue. Tissue bioengineering and stem/progenitor celltreatments have both been individually pursued for strokeneural repair therapies, with some benefit in tissue recovery.Emerging directions in stroke neural repair approachescombine these two therapies to use biopolymers with stem/progenitor transplants to promote greater cell survival in thetransplant and directed delivery of bioactive molecules to thetransplanted cells and the adjacent injured tissue. In this reviewthe background literature on a combined use of neural stem/progenitor cells encapsulated in hyaluronan gels is discussedand the way this therapeutic approach can affect the importantprocesses involved in brain tissue reconstruction, such asangiogenesis, axon regeneration, neural differentiation andinflammation is clarified. The glycosaminoglycan hyaluronancan optimize those processes and be employed in a successfulneural tissue engineering approach.
